The Wonders of Raja Ampat's Coral Reefs to Tell Your Kids

The EKOPLOERS Team · July 8, 2026

After exploring the Kalimantan forest, where does Indonesia's nature adventure take us next? The answer: beneath the surface of the West Papua sea, home to a world wonder called Raja Ampat.

The heart of the world's coral reefs

Raja Ampat sits at the center of the "Coral Triangle" — the richest marine area on the planet. About 75% of all the world's coral species can be found here. Imagine: one region in Indonesia holds three-quarters of Earth's entire coral diversity!

Coral is an animal, not a rock

Here's a fact that almost always surprises kids: coral reefs are neither rocks nor plants — they're animals! Thousands of tiny animals called polyps live together, forming large structures that become homes for fish. And like other animals, coral can get sick: when the sea gets too warm, coral "bleaches" and can die.

More than 1,600 kinds of fish

Raja Ampat's waters are home to more than 1,600 fish species — from walking carpet sharks (yes, sharks that walk on their fins!) to giant manta rays whose wingspan can be as wide as a car.

Why should kids get to know the sea early?

Children will only protect what they love, and they only love what they know. Introducing the wonders of Indonesia's sea from an early age instills a sense of ownership — that Raja Ampat, and all of the archipelago's seas, are a heritage they will one day protect.

Fun ways to introduce it

  1. Through stories — an underwater adventure with characters they love sticks far better than memorized facts.
  2. Through short documentary videos about coral reefs.
  3. Through open questions — "What do you think happens if the coral dies?"

Kiko & Boni's next adventure takes them to the Raja Ampat sea! Ocean Whispers — The Story of Kiko and the Coral Reef Mystery (EKOPLOERS™ Book 2) is coming soon. See the book details and join the newsletter to be the first to know.
