Tips for Introducing Two Languages to Kids Early

The EKOPLOERS Team · July 7, 2026

Many parents want their kids to be fluent in English from a young age, but aren't sure where to start. The good news: research shows ages 5-10 are the golden window for learning a second language — and it doesn't have to happen through rigid lessons.

1. Start with stories, not memorization

Children learn a language fastest when they don't realize they're learning. Bilingual storybooks that show Indonesian and English text side by side let kids absorb new vocabulary naturally, because they focus on the story — not the lesson.

2. Read in two languages, alternating

Try this pattern: read one page in Indonesian first, then repeat it in English. The child already understands the context, so their brain just has to "match" the new words to meanings they already know.

3. Choose characters they love

A child will ask to read the same book over and over if they fall in love with the characters. That repetition is exactly what you want — it's how vocabulary sticks. Characters like curious Kiko the orangutan or loyal Boni the owl give kids a reason to open the book again.

4. Involve the ears, not just the eyes

Combine reading with listening. Audiobooks help children pick up correct pronunciation — something hard to get from text alone. Listen together in the car or before bed.

5. Make it a small routine, not a big target

15 minutes every day is far more effective than 2 hours once a week. Pick the same time each day — after the evening bath or before bed — until reading becomes a habit your child looks forward to.
